What Is SMO? Social Media Optimisation Explained

SOCIAL MEDIA

SMO makes your brand easy to find, trust and share on social platforms. Learn how it differs from SMM and the steps to optimise your profiles and website.

Social media optimisation (SMO) is the work of making your brand easy to discover, understand and share on social platforms. Where SEO helps you get found on search engines, SMO helps you get found, and passed along, on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, X and WhatsApp.

SMO vs SMM: what is the difference?

SMO focuses on optimisation: your profiles, content format and how shareable your website is. Social media marketing (SMM) is the broader activity of publishing content, running campaigns, managing the community and paid promotion. Good SMM always starts with solid SMO.

Part 1: Optimise your profiles

  • Consistent name and handle across platforms, so people can find you easily.
  • Clear bio saying what you do, who you help and where you are, with relevant keywords people search for inside the app.
  • Recognisable profile image, usually your logo, sized correctly for each platform.
  • Working links and contact buttons: website, WhatsApp, call, email or booking.
  • Highlights, pinned posts and featured sections that answer common questions and show your best work.

Part 2: Optimise your content

  • Native formats: vertical video for Reels and Shorts, carousels for tips, documents and articles on LinkedIn.
  • Captions with keywords, because social platforms work increasingly like search engines.
  • Relevant hashtags in moderation, a few specific tags rather than dozens of generic ones.
  • Accessibility: subtitles on videos and alt text on images.

Part 3: Optimise your website for sharing

This is the part most businesses miss. When someone shares a link to your site, the platform builds a preview card from tags in your page code:

  • Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image) control previews on Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp.
  • Twitter/X card tags control previews on X.
  • A 1200 × 630 pixel share image for each page makes links look professional instead of broken.
  • Share buttons on blog posts make it effortless for readers to pass your content on.

Every article on this blog, for example, generates its own branded share image automatically.

How to measure SMO

Track profile visits, follower growth, saves, shares, link clicks and, most importantly, enquiries that come from social channels. Tag your profile links with UTM parameters so Google Analytics shows exactly which platform sent each visitor.

Frequently asked questions

Is SMO still relevant in 2026?

Yes. People increasingly search inside social apps and check a brand’s profiles before buying. Well-optimised profiles and shareable content directly affect enquiries.

Which social platform is best for my business?

Instagram and Facebook suit most consumer and local businesses, LinkedIn suits B2B, and YouTube suits anyone who can teach or demonstrate. Start where your customers already spend time.
