9 Ways to Lower Your Cost per Lead on Google Ads
Paying too much for every enquiry? These nine practical fixes reduce wasted spend and improve conversion rates on Google Ads campaigns.
Cost per lead (CPL) is simple: total ad spend divided by the number of leads. Lowering it means either spending less on clicks that never convert, or converting more of the clicks you already pay for. Here are nine ways to do both.
1. Fix conversion tracking first
If Google cannot see which clicks become leads, its automated bidding cannot optimise. Track form submissions, calls from ads, calls from your website and, where possible, qualified leads imported from your CRM.
2. Review the search terms report weekly
Look at the actual searches that triggered your ads. Add irrelevant ones as negative keywords: "free", "jobs", "course", "DIY" and competitor names you do not want to target are common examples.
3. Tighten match types
Broad match can work with strong conversion data, but early on, phrase and exact match keep spending focused on relevant searches.
4. Separate campaigns by intent
Group high-intent keywords ("book", "near me", "cost", "hire") separately from research keywords so you can bid more aggressively where buyers are ready.
5. Send clicks to a dedicated landing page
Homepages try to say everything to everyone. A landing page that matches the ad, with one clear offer and a short form, usually converts far better.
6. Make your offer more compelling
"Contact us" is weak. "Free 20-minute consultation", "Same-day quote" or "First check-up at a fixed price" give people a reason to act now.
7. Use all relevant assets
Add sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, call assets, location assets and images. They make ads larger, more informative and more clickable.
8. Adjust by location and schedule
Check which cities, devices and hours produce leads. Reduce bids (or exclude) where you get clicks but no enquiries, and focus spend when your team can answer calls.
9. Follow up fast
A lead contacted within minutes is far more likely to convert than one contacted the next day. Automated email or WhatsApp acknowledgements plus fast human follow-up improve the real cost per customer.
Measure the right number
The cheapest lead is not always the best. Track which campaigns produce leads that actually become customers, and optimise toward cost per sale where you can.
