Google Analytics 4 for Small Businesses: What to Track
GA4 can feel overwhelming. Here are the few reports and conversions small businesses actually need, and how to set them up properly.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is powerful, but most small businesses only need a handful of things from it. Focus on these and you will know where your customers come from and which marketing is working.
1. Set up key events (conversions)
A key event is an action that matters to your business. Common examples:
- Contact or quote form submitted.
- Phone number tapped on mobile.
- WhatsApp or email link clicked.
- Booking completed.
- Purchase (for online stores, with value).
Use Google Tag Manager to track these reliably, and mark them as key events in GA4.
2. Understand your traffic sources
The Traffic acquisition report shows visits and key events by channel: organic search, paid search, social, email, referral and direct. This is where you see which channels bring enquiries, not just visitors.
3. Tag your campaigns
Add UTM parameters to links in emails, social posts, WhatsApp messages and your Google Business Profile so GA4 labels traffic correctly instead of lumping it into "direct".
4. Check your top pages
The Pages and screens report shows which pages people visit. Combine it with key events to see which pages lead to enquiries.
5. Link Google Search Console and Google Ads
Linking Search Console shows the search queries that bring organic visitors. Linking Google Ads lets you import conversions for better bidding.
6. Respect privacy
Mention analytics in your privacy policy and use a consent banner where required. Consent mode lets GA4 model data when visitors decline cookies.
Build a simple monthly dashboard
Track the same few numbers every month: total users, key events by channel, conversion rate, top landing pages and cost per lead (with ad data). Looker Studio can pull this into a single page.
Conversion tracking setup is included in every engagement. See our strategy and paid ads services.
Frequently asked questions
Is GA4 free?
Yes, the standard version of Google Analytics 4 is free and sufficient for nearly all small and mid-sized businesses.
Why do GA4 numbers differ from my ad platforms?
Each platform counts and attributes conversions differently, and privacy settings block some tracking. Look at trends and use consistent definitions rather than expecting exact matches.
