How to Plan a Blog That Generates Leads, Not Just Traffic

CONTENT MARKETING

Traffic is easy to chase and hard to monetise. Here is how to plan blog topics around buyer questions so articles turn readers into enquiries.

Plenty of business blogs get visitors but no customers. The problem is usually topic choice: articles written to attract clicks rather than to help people who might actually buy. Here is a framework for planning content that generates leads.

Start with buyer questions, not keywords

List the questions your sales team, receptionist or founders hear every week. "How much does it cost?", "How long does it take?", "What is the difference between X and Y?", "Is it worth it?" These are the questions buyers search before they contact anyone.

Map topics to the buyer journey

  • Awareness: the reader has a problem. ("Why is my website not showing on Google?")
  • Consideration: the reader is comparing solutions. ("SEO vs Google Ads: which is better for a new business?")
  • Decision: the reader is choosing a provider. ("What to ask before hiring an SEO agency", "SEO pricing explained")

Most blogs over-invest in awareness content. Decision-stage articles get less traffic but far more enquiries.

Build topic clusters

Group articles around each core service. A pillar page (your service page or a complete guide) links to several detailed articles, and each article links back. This structure helps readers explore and signals topical authority to search engines.

Add a clear next step to every post

Every article should offer one relevant action: a free audit, a checklist download, a consultation or a related service page. Put it in the middle and at the end of the post, not just in the sidebar.

Prove expertise

Include examples from your work, original screenshots, simple data from your own projects and the opinions of your specialists. This is what separates useful content from generic articles.

Publish consistently and update

Two good articles a month, every month, beats ten rushed posts once a year. Review older articles every six to twelve months and update facts, examples and screenshots.

Measure leads per article

In Google Analytics, check which posts lead to form submissions, calls or service page visits. Write more articles like those.
